Toddler sizing is the one purchase where you are buying for a body that does not exist yet. Everything else you buy fits the child standing in front of you. Holiday pajamas have to fit a child three months from now.
If you have kids, you already know that feeling.
Kids Grow on Their Own Schedule, Not the Calendar's
There is no reliable way to predict a growth spurt. Your child can sit in the same size for eight months and then shoot up over a single summer of swim lessons and popsicles.
Which means the size chart is doing less work than it looks like it is doing.
A chart tells you what fits today. It cannot tell you what happens after a July of running around barefoot. Most parents figure this out the hard way, usually in a photo where one sleeve is riding halfway up a forearm.
So the useful question is not what size your child wears. It is which direction your child is heading, and how fast they got here from the last size.
The 4T-to-5T Jump Is Where Toddler Sizing Stops Being Toddler Sizing
T sizes are built around toddler proportions. Rounder middle, shorter rise, more room through the hips, a body still shaped by the last two years of diapers and squatting and hauling itself upright.
Somewhere around 4T that body starts to change shape.
Kids stretch out. The torso lengthens, the middle narrows, the legs get long in a way that seems to happen overnight. So 5T is not simply 4T with an extra inch added everywhere. It is a slightly different silhouette for a slightly different kid.
That is why 5T can feel snug across the shoulders while the pants suddenly graze the ankle. Nothing is wrong. Your child is just leaving the toddler cut behind.

Snug Fit Is Not a Style Decision
This part matters, and it gets misread constantly.
In the U.S., children's sleepwear has to be one of two things. Either flame resistant, or snug-fitting. Those are the rules under the CPSC children's sleepwear flammability standards, and every brand selling kids' pajamas here works inside them.
Snug-fit sets go the second route. They are not treated with flame retardants. They pass by fitting close to the body, because loose fabric holds a pocket of air, and air is what a flame needs to keep moving.
That is why snug-fit toddler styles carry a yellow hangtag stating the garment is not flame resistant and should fit snugly. Ours do too. It is not a warning that something is wrong with the pajamas. It is a label telling you how they were designed to work.
Snug does not mean tight. It means close. No red marks, no pulling at the shoulders, nothing that keeps your child from climbing into a bunk bed or throwing an arm over their head at 2 a.m.
When Sizing Up Helps, and When It Quietly Backfires
Going up one size is usually a reasonable call, especially in August for a December set.
Going up two is not. At two sizes past their body, sleepwear stops behaving like sleepwear. Fabric bunches, pant legs drag, and the snug fit that made the set safe in the first place is gone.
One size. That is the whole rule.
We tell parents to size up if their child is between sizes. Worth knowing: customers do tell us the sets run a little small. If your child is already sitting near the top of 4T in August, 5T is the safer bet by December. If they just moved into 4T last month, stay there.
One thing to hold onto, though: that size-up call is for loose-fitting and flame-resistant styles. With snug-fit sleepwear, the close fit is the safety mechanism, so those sets need to fit snugly now — order your child's current size and let the stretch handle the growing.

This is the part no chart accounts for.
A set that fits perfectly and gets rejected is not a good fit. So bring your child in on it early. Let them pick the print. Let them try it on the day it lands. Kids who chose the pajamas argue about them a lot less.

Holiday sets are pre-order, and that is the honest tension in this whole thing.

So the size question does not have to be answered perfectly in August. It has to be answered again in November, when the set is in your hands and your child is standing in it.
Final Thoughts
You are not going to nail the size every year. Nobody does. Some Christmas mornings the sleeves are a little long and some years the pants are a little short and the photos are good either way.
What you are actually choosing is whether the fit gets in the way.
The right size is the one your child never mentions. It disappears under the blanket fort and the early wake-up and the pile of wrapping paper. And years later, that is what stays with you.
Not the size on the tag, but a kid in soft pajamas on a warm December morning, sandy feet and all, too busy to notice what they were wearing.
